Twenty-one fine black-and-white illustrations by Augustus Hoppin augment this handsome little tome, including at frontis, tissue-protected, with fetching initials beginning with the first chapter, and with previous owner's inscriptions, neatly rendered, at blank fly-leaf prior to frontispiece and then again at first page, in pencil and pen, being the book of Mrs. Gertrude Hill Gordon, a New York address in 1879. As is the case with other copies and editions, the spelling at front cover and spine and publisher's ad is Back-Log, but on title page Backlog, and the spine also says Houghton, Osgood & Co. Bound in the original publisher's green cloth, a fetching gilt-illustrated device to front cover, stamped and illustrated also in black. Bumping to spine head and foot, forward cock to spine. Charles Dudley Warner (September 12, 1829 – October 20, 1900) was an American essayist, novelist, and friend of Mark Twain, who was a pall-bearer at his funeral. He was known for his folk-spun humor and essays literary and personal. He is also known for his work as an editor, including of the Hartford Courant and Harper's Weekly.
