Stevenson-Hamilton, J. - South African Eden. From Sabi Game Reserve to Kruger National Park.

Collins. London 1974. Tan cloth boards. 315pp illustrated b/w photographs. 8vo. No inscriptions, eps tanned, spotted, light sello offset, in all other respects a VG+ copy in matching dustwrapper (no chips, tears, or loss). An above-average copy. ISBN: 0021675910 The author describes the early days of the Sabi Game Reserve; the endless battles against poachers, against developers, against officialdom, against disease and drought; the larger-than-life characters - Colonel Steinacher with his private army; Henry Wolhuter who killed a full-grown lion with his sheath-knife; Major Fraser who turned night into day and slept on the floor in the midst of his twenty-five dogs. He carries the story on until the 1930s, by which time the battle had been won and the park was established for posterity. An epilogue by Rocco Knobel, then Director of National Parks, brings the story up to date.
