Roberts, S. C. - British Universities [Britain in Pictures series]

Collins, London, 1947. First Edition, Hardcover (Printed Boards). Very Good Condition/Very Good. Mr. Roberts, in a final summing-up of his subject, concludes that "A University should surely be wide enough and catholic enough to educate men and women in the art of living as well as in the arts and sciences." To-day, with ever in¬creasing opportunities for students to complete their education at a University, the whole subject of University education has become of the greatest interest and importance to us all. The Universities of to-day are modelled on an old tradition and even the youngest of them have taken over something of the traditions of the oldest foundations which date back to the twelfth century. It is for this reason that Mr. Roberts' account of the early history of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge and of the first Scottish Universities is especially valuable. In this book, too, he gives an admirably clear picture of the actual working of a University, its functions and its organisation. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 48 pages.
