Placed under the joint curatorship of the Fondation Gandur pour l'Art and the Mémorial de Caen, this exhibition continues the artistic and historical exploration initiated in 2020 with The Liberation of Painting, 1945-1962. This first collaboration recalled how abstract art imposed itself immediately after the war, faced with the impossibility for artists like Jean Fautrier, Hans Hartung or Pierre Soulages to continue to represent the world with the traditional means of paint. This second cycle allows us to understand how, at the turn of the 1960s young artists turned away from the then dominant abstraction to propose a return to the image and the figure. Through cross-examinations between works of art, archives and period objects, the exhibition invites the public to immerse themselves in this period of history as complex as it is striking. *** La Fondation Gandur pour l'Art et le Mémorial de Caen présentent Années pop, années choc, 1960-1975 leur seconde exposition croisant art et histoire. Placée sous le commissariat conjoint de la Fondation Gandur pour l'Art et du Mémorial de Caen, cette exposition poursuit l'exploration artistique et historique initiée en 2020 avec La libération de la peinture, 1945-1962. Cette première collaboration rappelait comment l'art abstrait s'est imposé dans l'immédiat après-guerre, face à l'impossibilité pour des artistes comme Jean Fautrier, Hans Hartung ou Pierre Soulages de continuer à représenter le monde avec les moyens traditionnels de la peinture. Ce second cycle permet quant à lui de comprendre comment, au tournant des années 1960 en France, de jeunes artistes se sont détournés de l'abstraction alors dominante pour proposer un retour à l'image et à la figure. Au travers de regards croisés entre oeuvres d'art, archives et objets d'époque, l'exposition invite le public à une immersion dans cette période de l'histoire aussi complexe que marquante.
