Corners heavily worn and front hinge starting to crack. Occasional small library stamps in the margins; text otherwise unmarked. Folding plate at page 72 is torn. Closed tears in the folds of the plates at pages 204 and 388. LACKS pages 285-286 and 463-464. Color plate at page 654 is in pieces. A heavily worn but readable copy. Volume 87 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, containing all weekly issues from July 4 through December 26, 1885. Contains reporting on the wedding of Princess Beatrice (daughter of Queen Victoria) to Prince Henry of Battenberg; the International Inventions Exhibition in South Kensington; a special feature about Hatfield House, where Queen Elizabeth I grew up; the unification of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia under Alexander of Battenberg; the United Kingdom general election for 1885, which saw an increase in power for the Liberals led by William Gladstone; and the Serbo-Bulgarian War. Also contains the original serialized version of THE MASTER OF THE MINE by Robert Williams Buchanan. Among the many fine engravings are a full-page portrait of Henry Morton Stanley, who had just become governor of the Congo Free State; a full-page portrait of Ulysses S. Grant, who had just died; a folding plate depicting Balmoral Castle; and numerous views of the aforementioned conflicts in the Balkans. Measures approx. 15.9" x 11.75. Fair .
