W. 3 (black and white) plates depicting the stunning binding w. Marie Antoinette's heraldic device, 1 plate depicting the blue tabis and 2 large folding maps, depicting part of the route to Strasbourg. In fine orange - light brown mor., over green cloth brds. 1 vertical single giltruled line along the spine, the latter w. the title giltlettered and 2 small horiziontal giltruled lines at top and bottom. [n1, 7 unsigned lvs.]. (II, (1) - (12), II (blank) pp.). (Limited edition, printed in 25 copies only.). (Handmade paper watermarked 'Abbey Mills Greenfield'). From the preface: 'The present unique and most precious souvenir of Marie Antoinette is the set of illustrated Maps especially drawn for her use during her eight days' Marriage Progress from Strasbourg to Versailles in 1770. These maps were drawn by Tonnet, "Geographe du Roy", and are very beautifully designed and coloured. ... each map is mounted on blue tabis and so divided as to be easily folded up by the Dauphine when not in use... enclosed in the Original and splendidly decorated red morocco case, lined w. blue tabis... the present is believed to be the first Binding on which Marie Antoinette's Arms were stamped. On none of the books bound for her Library is the Fourth Quarter, the Tyrol, found; ...' Printed by The King's Printer 'E. & S.' or Eyre and Spottiswoode, re-appointed as King's Printer in 1901 after the accession of King Edward VII, from 1929 onwards a publishing firm with the same name.
