Spreading southward like a gigantic fan of humanity, these tribes continue to populate most of North America differing in appearance, language, and customs eventually to call certain areas of this new continent their home. it is believed that the Cheokees and Iroquois are brother tribes having come from the same source. They are known fr their superior height and robust stature. Claiming for their hunting grounds what is now parts of 8 states The Cherokees became the mightiest Indian Empire of all the Southeastern Tribes. graduatlly their towns grew up near the mouths of small streams where clear water was plentiful. When the first white man Hern ando De Soto came into Cherokee country in the 16th cenury there were about 25,000 Cherokees. This Spanish adventurer coming into the Cherokee mountain territory in search of gold began the long and painful march of the white man into the Cherokee world. This influx pushed hard against the Cherokees' world from 1684 to 1835. Consistently broken the Cherokee history shrank to a small boundare in Western North Carolina. In 1838-39 the Cherokee were forced to move to Oklahoma where over 4,000 died on the "Trail of tears.".
