Dr. Barndardo's Homeswas founded in 1866 by Thomas Bernardo as The National Incorporated Association for the Reclamation of Destitute Waif Children. At this time, 42 years after its foundation, it cared for over 8,000 children in residence "including 1,100 babies and 1,050 who are crippled, deformed, helpless, or incurable."
