Judith Binney and Gillian Chaplin and Craig Wallace - Mihaia: the Prophet Rua Kenana And His Community At Maungapohatu
Bridget Williams Books 2011 Soft Cover, 256pp. Rua Kenana was an extraordinary prophetic leader from the Urewera. Resisting threats to expel the Tūhoe people from their ancestral lands, he established a remarkable community at Maungapohatu, identifying himself as the ‘Mīhaia’ or ‘Messiah’ for Tūhoe. Judith Binney, Gillian Chaplin and Craig Wallace researched the history of the community in the 1970s, working first with a collection of photographs that they took to the Urewera. Sharing these photographs with descendants of Rua and his followers, they found that ‘strangers opened their hearts to us, and shared their stories’. This biographical account focuses on a dramatic moment in Urewera history, one that incorporated a shocking episode in early twentieth-century New Zealand. The rich photographic record documents not only the police assault on the Maungapohatu community but also the lives of the people and Rua’s utopian vision. The prophet lived into the 1930s, a leader still working to support and sustain his followers. Described on publication as ‘an unparalleled record of a community through time’, this remarkable history has been in demand since first publication by Oxford University Press in 1979. Dickens, Charles [1812 - 1870] - BLEAK HOUSE
London: Bradbury and Evans, 1853. 1st book edition. Custom bound in a deep, and lovely, full hunter-green leather binding by Bayntun, elaborate gilt decorated spine, gilt stamped Dickens bust to front board, gilt facsimile signature to rear board, gilt dentelles, AEG, marbled eps. xvi, 624 pp. Frontis, engraved title & 38 inserted plates by Hablot K. Browne. 8vo. 8-1/2" x 5-1/2". Text - VG+ [some foxing, though the plates appear to have been washed sometime in the past]. Binding - Fine. A handsome volume. At the centre of Bleak House is a long-running legal case in the Court of Chancery, Jarndyce and Jarndyce, which comes about because a testator has written several conflicting wills. In a preface to the 1853 first edition, Dickens said there were many actual precedents for his fictional case. One such was probably Thellusson v Woodford, in which a will read in 1797 was contested and not determined until 1859. Though many in the legal profession criticised Dickens's satire as exaggerated, Bleak House helped support a judicial reform movement that culminated in the enactment of legal reform in the 1870s.

Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Paperback, XIV+744 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503516400. ¶ Peter T. Ricketts, Honorary Professor of French at the University of Birmingham, and Emeritus Professor at Queen Mary and Westfield, University of London, has led a long and distinguished career in the field of Romance Philology, and in Occitan studies in particular. In addition to his leading role in the Association Internationale d'Etudes Occitanes (AIEO), he has devoted many years in the service of Occitan Studies. Peter T. Ricketts is perhaps especially noted for an in-progress edition (with Cyril P. Hershon) of the Breviari d'Amor by Matfre Ermengaud, and for the Concordance of Medieval Occitan (CMO), a vast database the aim of which is to document the entire corpus of medieval Occitan texts and to make them available in electronic format as an active and exhaustive working tool for all scholars in the field. The first tranche of this project, on the poetry of the troubadours (Brepols 2001), has already been received with wide critical acclaim. The present publication includes articles by 63 specialists in fields as wide-ranging as history, literature, linguistics, philology, musicology, metrics and philosophy, addressing sources and topics from a variety of provenances in Old French and Old Occitan, as also in Medieval Latin, Castilian, Catalan, Middle High German, Hispano-Arabic, and Hebrew. It is divided into two major sections. The first is concerned with narrative texts: romance, epic, and religious literature; the second with the poetry of the troubadours: firstly their lyric legacy, its sources and influences, the vidas which accompany their transmission, the troubadours themselves, but also instances of their non-lyric output such as proverbs and ensenhamens. Also among the articles are editions of texts, some hitherto unpublished. Taken together, this collection represents a very broad panorama of current research, and offers a major contribution to the advancement of Medieval Studies. Languages : French, Occitan.
