SHAMBACH, BARBARA WALLACE - Equestrian Excellence the Stories of Our Olympic Equestrian Medal Winners: From Stockholm 1912 Thru Atlanta 1996

Boonsboro, MD: Half Halt Press, Inc, 1996. First Edition (?). First Printing; Hardcover. ISBN: 0939481472. Cover is blue with gold lettering on spine. Pages are clean and tight; this is a NEW book. DJ in a mylar cover. Lavishly illustrated with color and b/w photos. Covers the achievements of the USA Olympic Equestrian team, in the sports of dressage, show jumping, and three-day eventing. Originally the teams consisted of military gentleman. After WWII it became more accepted for civilians to participate, and eventually women also competed [the 2000 American show jumping team was an all women squad]. These are the only disciplines in which men and women compete as individuals, as equals, with women winning medals as often as the men. Some of the names mentioned, and who are still active in teaching, training and/or riding are: William Steinkraus, George Morris, HIlda Gurney, Leslie Burr Howard, Anne Kursinski, Robert Dover, Carol Lavell, Michael Poulin, Michelle Gibson, Steffan Peters, Guenter Seidel, David O'Connor, Karen O'Connor, Peter Leone, et al; many of these exceptional riders are still active, still leading the way for America and winning. Too often during the quadriennial celebration of the Summer Olympics the equestrian events are pushed off to the margins, barely mentioned. Considering that the USA is considered one of the leading countries in fielding medal competitive teams, with frequent wins, this is puzzling. These are also the only events in which non-human athletes are allowed [with the exception of riding portion of the Pentathalon]. And many of these equestrians have competitive careers which last for years, or decades, unusual in the world of international level athletics. Oversized, 3#. ; Photographs; 8 3/4 x 11; 173 pages; Signed by Author. Fine in Fine dust jacket .
