With 9 engraved plates, of which 4 folding (one plate with text loss). Contemporary half calf, spine with five raised bands gilt and with red title label, worn. Bookplate (Aron Westén). Old annotations. Copy of Ericsberg. Scarce comprehensive account on Algeria by a Swede who served at the Swedish Consulate in Alger. The first part is devoted to Algeria in general including information about the history and the various inhabitants (Turcs, Arabs, Jews, Christians). The second part deals with the city of Alger, its origin, climate, goverment, military, pirates, marriage, etc. One chapter (pp. 454 - 536) is devoted to slavery with interesting and detailed information about their conditions. Includes two folding city plans of Alger (with tear and small loss) and Oran, and three nice costume plates. Playfair 243. His work is based on previous written works which are listed in the prefaces but also to a large extent on his own observations and experiences. His account is considered to be the best contemporary description of the area.
