At present no guide exists which is exclusively devoted to describing the wealth of art that hangs in the numerous galleries of this country. Joan Abse's book is designed to fill this gap. Her unique guide contains an account of the permanent collections of paintings in British public galleries together with descriptions of the pictures in the royal collection and in university galleries which are normally available to public view. Most entries consist of a brief account of the gallery itself, its history and architecture, followed by notes on the major works of art, listed, as far as possible, according to place and time of origin.
