BRAWER, SID. - Do It Yourself Watergate Kit: The Watergate Papers, Volume I (a Collector's Piece).

Beverly Hills, CA: Waterbug Productions, 1973. 1973. - Quarto, 10-3/8 inches high by 7-3/8 inches wide. A portfolio consisting of 28 leaves, most printed on both sides, laid loose in stiff glossy paper folder printed in red, white and blue with the illustration of a patriotic ribbon adorning the front & rear covers. There is scattered foxing to the covers. Additionally laid in is a facsimile check in the amount of two hundred thousand dollars made out to "CREEP" (the Committee to Re-Elect the President) humorously drawn on the "El Banco de Montezuma's Revenge". Also laid in is a 45 rpm record of songs the humorist attributes to "Congressman William Hungate" of Missouri, consisting of the songs: "Down at the Old Watergate" and "When I'm the President". A fictional press release printed on an 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of paper is creased and darkened along the edges. The portfolio also contains a large order card printed on heavy pink card stock and a 10 inch high by 8 inch wide glossy publicity photograph by the Beverly Hills photographer Sid Brawer of Playboy model Leslie McCrea wearing only a "Nixon" caricature t-shirt proclaiming "Don't Bug Me". Nixon's fingers, raised in the "v" for "Victory" sign, have antennae on their tips. The order card, which is also illustrated with the photo of Leslie McCrea wearing the "Don't Bug Me" T-shirt and holding a copy of the book and record, includes the option to buy multiple copies of the whole kit which includes the book, T-shirts and records or multiple copies of each of these individual items. Brawer here offers 25 copies of the "Down At The Old Watergate" records for a total cost of $15.00. Very good. According to the fictional press release: "The WATERGATE PAPERS is far from being serious. It is a collection of miniature posters, featuring cartoons, actual news photos, and the now famous song written by Congressman Wm. L. "Bill" Huntgate of Missouri, "Down at the Old Watergate". Among the humorous caricatures are one depicting 2 young hip students climbing the steps of Watergate University on the steps of which a board lists courses such as "Bugging I & II", "Advanced File Burning", "Stealing (Major Prerequisites) CIA or FBI experience", among others. A caricature of King Nixon is captioned "Let me make this perfectly clear", "The Great Nixon" is caricatured as a magician drawing telegrams out of his hat from "Bomb Haiphong" mail bags hidden under the table, with the caption "And now for my next trick". A caricature of Nixon striding out of the White House with images of political cronies involved in criminal activities seen in the windows of the White House is captioned "We've taken crime off the streets". L. Patrick Gray is depicted in one caricature as burning documents at F.B.I. headquarters. The self-described Beverly Hills photographer and caricaturist Sid Brawer was the author and illustrator of this portfolio as well as of other parodies and caricatures of Richard Nixon including a larger broadside poster entitled "Nixon's Waterloo: From Whittier to Watergate" and T-shirts illustrated with caricatures of the embattled President Nixon. RARE. Very good .
