In 1876 Haller travelled by elephant across the Shan states (Eastern Burma) and Siam primarily to investigate the possibility of building a railway linking the countries with British India. It's a comprehensive narrative with information about the people, topography, trade and customs, etc. and supplemented with interesting illustrations.
