HARRIS, JOHN. - The Indian Mutiny. The British at War Series.
London, Hart-Davis MacGibbon. 1973, First Edition. (ISBN: 024610600X) Hard Cover with dust jacket. 208 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H). Map endpapers, illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, maps, portraits, reproductions. "(V)ividly recaptures the whole atmosphere of the time - the smell of battle , the cruel heat, the forced marches, the sieges, the appalling massacres. It was a war filled with treachery and incompetence, fought without mercy on either side - but also a war of incredible acts of heroism. It threw up remarkable personalities: Nicholson, who recaptured Delhi; Henry Lawrence, the defender of Lucknow; 'Holy' Havelock, the bible-thumping general who fought his way through to the relief of Lucknow only to find himself trapped there; and the dour uncompromising Colin Campbell who was sent to India after forty-years service to bring it back to sanity. (This book), with its exciting text and numerous illustrations, vividly evokes the huge and bloody struggle that stretched through the jungles and hills and across the parched plains of India." Cigarette odour, very light browning in margins of pages, boards slightly warped, browning to edges of textblock, slight bump at bottom of spine, small shallow bump on rear board. Dust jacket has light edgewear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, browning at edges, minor rubbing, tiny dint on front hinge, two small shallow bumps on rear panel. Very Good-/Very Good-.
