COTTRELL, LEONARD - The Lion Gate. A Journey in Search of the Mycenaeans

(London: Evans Brothers, 1963). . 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; no dustwrapper; pp. 256, incl. index; plates; map. Cloth somewhat stippled, and partially sunned; trace of foxing to top edge, prelims, and occasionally elsewhere. Good condition. "It concerns the Mycenaeans, the first Greek-speaking inhabitants of Greece, who began to enter the country at the beginning of the second millennium B.C. Gradually they became dominant, ruling from their strong-walled cities, and absorbing much from the Minoan civilization of Crete which they eventually conquered. They raided and traded in the eastern Aegaean, came into contact with the Hittite Empire, with Egypt, and some time in the thirteenth century B.C. mounted a great expedition against Troy. Then, perhaps exhausted by that war, they succumbed to the invading Dorians, leaving behind only the burned-out ruins of their palaces, and a legacy of heroic poetry which has proved more enduring than their mighty walls and deep-dug tombs. This essential outline has been accepted for a good number of years, but new facts have come to light which illustrate, amplify and sometimes modify it.".
