"The donor of the Godlonton Collection of Rhodesiana, Mr. William Ayliff Godlonton, C.B.E, was born in England in 1887. He is a grandson of an 1820 Settler named Robert Godlonton (1794-1884). Educated at Dulwich College in south London, Mr. Godlonton came to Southern Rhodesia and was enrolled as an attorney, notary and conveyancer of its High Court in 1910. He has rendered valuable public service by participating in or presiding over a number of official commssions of enquiry in Central Africa concerning African production and trade, education and also the civil service." - Catalogue of the Godlonton Collection of Rhodesiana..
