While the literary quality of Aguiar's writings is far from high, they are worth reading for their utopian character. Indeed, Aguiar's fiction appears to bear the influence of utopian works such as More's Utopia, Swift's Gulliver's Travels and Voltaire's Micromégas. The Viagem ao interior da Nova Hollanda narrates a trip to Australia and the discovery of the Valley of Reason, a magnificent kingdom where morality and order prevail. "A fictitious work written as a personal account of a journey the author took as servant accompanying his master on a voyage to Australia. He chose Australia as the scene for his moralizing, hoping that the new nation will be forever free from the vices of the Old World" - Ferguson. Ferguson 3133 (quoting copies at Mitchell Library and National Library, Canberra); Innocêncio VII, 405.
