Tall 4to, "Withdrawn" rubber stamp on front of "Occultations" publication - no other such markings on any other documents. ¶ The "Occultations" publication is stitched to the other larger titles. All publications are well-worn, with tattered edges. Some pages are uncut and the text throughout is clean and unmarked. The "Occultations" publication is a title in the series "Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge", and was "computed under the direction of the Smithsonian Institution by John Downes." It was published in Philadelphia in 1848 and contains brief introductory remarks and is eleven pages in total length (measuring 30 x 22.5 cm). The "Publications" volume was published as an Appendix and is in two parts containing 178 pages (and measuring 33.5 x 25 cm). It is intended to show what publications have been received by the Smithsonian Institution by way of exchange with other learned societies and institutions. Part I (35 pages) contains the statistics of what has been received up to 1855 from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Russia, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. Part II (34 pages) lists contributions from Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Also bound-in is "Discussion of the Magnetic and Meterological Observations made at the Girard College Observatory, Philadelphia in 1840 to 1845", Parts II and III, by A. D. Bache, 26 pages and 14 pages, published Washington City, 1862; and "Meteorological Observations made at Providence, R.I. over a period of 28 1/2 years from 1831 to 1860", by Alexis Caswell (179 pages, with errata slip, published Washington City, 1860).
