A beautifully written and illustrated story about a seal born on an ice floe in the Arctic Ocean. When humans begin harpooning the seals, the colony searches for a new home, braving storms and huge ice floes and fighting off a polar bear, until they find an idyllic island haven. The text is in French. Flammarion's "Albums du Pere Castor" initiated a new style and a new approach to children's books.
Feodor Rojankovsky [1891-1970] was born in Russia and educated at the Moscow Fine Arts Academy. Shortly after the First World War he moved to France, then to America in 1941. He illustrated more than a hundred books, most concerned with animals and nature. He wrote: "Two great events determined the course of my childhood. I was taken to the zoo and saw the most marvelous creatures on earth: bears, tigers, monkeys and reindeer, and, while my admiration was running high, I was given a set of color crayons. Naturally, I began immediately to depict the animals which captured my imagination." Rojankovsky won the Caldecott Medal in 1956 for his illustrations for "Frog Went A-Courtin'". Very good .
