No copy traced in the JAP or American Book Prices Current. Hoogendoorn, LansPo7, 1; Bierens de Haan 2666; Poggendorff I 1373. ''In his Progymnasmatum astronomiae restitutae de motu solis (Middelburg, 1619) Van Lansberge taught the probability of the earth's motion according to the Copernican doctrine; the same is true of Bedenckingen op den dagelyckschen , ende jaerlyckschen loop van den aerdt-kloot (Middelburg, 1629), translated into Latin by M. Hortensius as Commentationes in motum terrae diurnum, et annuum (Middelburg, 1630)'' (DSB, p.28). Philips van Lansbergen (1561-1632) was a striking Protestant pastor who lived from 1561 to 1632. Lansbergen was born in Ghent, grew up in France, studied in England and ended up in the Northern Netherlands after the "Fall of Antwerp" in 1585. After a short stay in Leiden, he became pastor in Goes until he settled in Middelburg in 1613, where he continued his astronomical research until the end of his life. He was an avid supporter of Copernicus's theory. His theory states that the earth revolves around the sun, rather than the other way around. Both the Catholic and Protestant Church had great difficulty with this theory. Lansbergen gained a lot of prestige because of his knowledge, not only in the field of theology, but especially in mathematics and physics. His contemporaries Kepler and Galilei and kindred spirits like Jacob Cats highly respected Lansbergen and his ideas. This edition contains recommendations by Daniel Heinsius and Jacob Cats. Based on his tables, predictions could be made about the movements of the planets, Lansbergen has written various books, but his Bedenckingen Op den Daghelijckschen, and the Iaerlijcksen loop vanden Aerdt-cloot became a true bestseller. You could say that Lansbergen wrote the first Dutch-language popular scienctific work about the earth moving around the sun. Today a Middelburg observatory is named after Lansbergen.
