First edition of the chief psychological work of the great Geneva philosopher and naturalist Bonnet [1720 - 1793]favouring the man-as-machine philosophy as put forward by La Mettrie. DSB vol. II, pp. 286 - 287: 'Bonnet is considered one of the fathers of modern biology. He is distinguished for both his experimental research and his philosophy, which exerted a profound influence upon the naturalists of the 18th and 19th century ... after 1750 ... his research was in plant physiology. ... Next Bonnet turned to philosophy and methodology. A true theoretician of biology, he exercised an enormous influence in this field and maintained a correspondence with almost all the scientists of his time. He published works that caused a considerable stir - among them 'Essai de Psychologie'(1754) and 'Essai analytique sur les facultés de l'âme'(1759 [=1760]... Well before Claude Bernard, Bonnet attributed a preponderent role in scientific research to the "art of observing". .. The personal qualities of Charles Bonnet, as much as his writings, justify the extraordinary reputation that he enjoyed in his lifetime and that survives today.': Caillet, 1402: Fuetter, Gesch. ex. Wiss., i.l.c.: comp. G&M 308: Klein, Hist. of scientific psychology, 483: Murphy, Hist. introd. to modern psychology, p. 37: 'Bonnet described memory in terms of activities in nerve fibers ... He performed a rough experiment on the 'span of attention'. He suggested that each quality of sensation must depend upon the specific brain area axcited.': Boring, 204: 'These men [Bonnet a.o], referring back to Descartes and Malebranche, impressed by Locke, too early to know the Scottish philosophers, did a great deal to establish an empiricism as common-sense psychology in 19th century France.': Wolf, a hist. of science, vol. II, 687: 'Bonnet combined the 'sensation' psychology of Condillac with the 'vibration'psychology of Heartly...': Boring, Hist. of experimental psychology, p. 211: Fueter, Grosse Schweizer Forscher, p. 148: Revilliod, Physiciens et naturalistes genevois, c. p. 32f: First edition.
