MARE, PIETER DE (1757-1796), - Old man with pipe and jug and old woman with coal burner

A standing man holding a pipe and a jug.Two handcoloured etchings on hand laid paper, sheet size 73 x 118 mm., made by Pieter de Mare (1758-1796) after Christina Chalon (Amsterdam 1749-1808 Hazerswoude). These two companion prints together illustrate a short poem in: Johannes Le Francq van Berkhey: 'Zinspelende gedigtjes, op de geestige printjes ge-etst door Pieter de Mare, na de teekeningen van mejuffrouw Christina Chalon, berustende in de verzameling van [...] H.A. Dibbets', Amsterdam: Willem van Vliet, 1793. The prints (number 16 and 17) illustrate a poem in which the man wants a hot coal to light his pipe, and the woman wants a drink from the man's jug. In very good condition, discolouration in the margin edges.
