ADDISON, Joseph, Esq - Works of the Late Joseph Addison

1741. ADDISON, Joseph, Esq. THE WORKS OF THE LATE RIGHT HONOURABLE JOSEPH ADDISON, Esq. In Four Volumes. The Third Edition: with a Compleat Index. London: Printed for J.and R. Tonson, at Shakespear's-Head in the Strand. 1741. Small 4to. in a 20th century library binding of grey cloth, with speckled edges. Ex-library, slight erasures to spines the only external marks. There is a handwritten ink note on the frontis piece verso: "James Edward Beers, New York, Aug. 23rd, 1839. This work was purchased on the twenty-third day of August, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine, at an Old Book Stand adjoining the Post Office in the Park, and was believed to be the only complete Edition of the same print extant. The price paid was Seven dollars; and that sum was nothing compared to the actual worth of this Edition. It was published and printed at London in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and forty one, being ninety eight years since. I have resolved to refuse the loan of any of these volumes, under any circumstances, whatever. J.E.B." Beneath are two later ink inscriptions in two different hands: "Purchased of James E. Beers Sept. 4, 1875, by Chauncey Shaffer" "Presented Nov. 17, 1887, by Hon. Chauncey Shaffer to his grand-daughter Clara Maria Burt." Bindings are lightly sunned. Internally, the frontis is oddly trimmed at the fore-edge, and bears a few tape-repairs. The set bears slight occasional foxing and an occasional touch of soil throughout; one volume shows a faint dampstain of varying size to several leaves, with slight evidence of worming to several others. A very good and serviceable set overall. .
