Delaune, Etienne (1518-1595) - August [The twelve months

Eighth engraving from the suite of 12 entitled 'Première Suite des Mois de l'Année' with an allegory of the month of August. Wreaths with elements recalling harvest decorate the frame; the medaillon at the top center contains the zodiacal sign of the Virgo. Men and women are performing the crop harvest on the right. The harvest is being collected and drained at the center. On the background a lanscape. At the bottom on a cartouche: 'Foelices Auguste iacis, bona dum sua norunt. / Agricolas, fruges illis, fructusq. rependens. / Cum pri. Regis'; nr. ´29´on the bottom right. l Engraving on paper, trimmed within platemark; total: 186 x 247 mm. State I/2 before plate numbering. Pasted on thicker paper, margin damaged especially to the right.
