Delaune, Etienne (1518-1595) - April [The twelve months

Fourth engraving from the suite of 12 entitled 'Première Suite des Mois de l'Année' with an allegory of the month of April. Wreaths with elements recalling hunting decorate the frame; the medaillon at the top center contains the zodiacal sign of the Taurus. A hunting scene with a man on a horse chasing a deer being taken by two dogs. Other two men are running on he ground blowing hunting horns. In the background a montanious landscape. At the bottom on a cartouche: 'Aprilis flores aperit avibusq. canoris / Paria dat laetas ostendit arbore frondes / Cum pri Regis' l Engraving on paper, trimmed within platemark; total: 177 x 238 mm. State I/2 before plate numbering. Small stain on the right, on the decorative frame
