One of the "Chenango Twenty Towns" townships ceded to New York State in a treaty between the Oneida Indians and Governor George Clinton in 1788, the town of Oxford became an early trading center. Built in 1837, the Chenango Canal ran through the center of the village which became one of the most important ports along that waterway. Of the town's booming bluestone quarries, those owned by the F.G. Clarke Blue Stone Company were the most productive of the period. Close to transportation, the heavy bluestones could be ferried by riverboats to be cut down east. Though still used for patios, fireplaces and garden walkways, the advent of Portland Cement and the stock market crash spelled the end of an era. RARE. Good .
