Backstrip is lacking bottom two inches, smaller chip at top edge. Black spine label is a little chipped and worn but still quite readable. Inside, one section is completely free of the binding, the remaining text pages are still fairly firmly attached. There is light foxing throughout, but all the pages are quite readable; many pages have little or no foxing. All seven plates and tissue guards are present but foxed. This is the First American Edition of Victorian physician William Acton's comprehensive work on venereal diseases, with seven plates and numerous drawings. His work led to the Contagious Diseases Act of 1866, which required that all prostitutes be examined for venereal disease and treated at government expense. Small 4to 9" - 11" tall. 334 pages. H6.
