Various authors - Changeover. November, 1970. Vol. I, No. 8

Detroit, Changeover, Publisher, 1970. Tabloid. Tabloid newspaper format. 8 pp. Black and white illustrations throughout. Single issue of this newspaper published by and primarily for, African Americans in Detroit, focusing on civil rights and social justice issues, both locally and nationally. This issue with front page coverage of what the paper called, "a small race war" in the Pontiac, between white and Black youths. This apparently arose as a result of the beating of two Black students by a group of white students. Also present is coverage of the incident between Detroit police and members of the National Committee to Combat Fascism (NCCF), which resulted in the "Detroit 15" being arrested for murder. The NCCF was the Detroit chapter of the Black Panther Party. While smaller than most chapters, due in part to the presence of other more established civil rights groups and Black Power organizations, the Detroit police engaged in illegal harassment and violence against the group, in an effort to discredit and disband the organization. This 1970 event was the culmination of the friction between the two groups. All 15 were tried and acquitted on murder charges, although three were convicted of felony assault. Short piece on women's liberation also present. GOOD condition. Fold crease present, although apparently misfolded. Moderate toning. Minor chipping and tearing along the fore edge. Paper somewhat brittle. Good .
