CORDER, John Shewell - Christchurch or Withepole House, a brief memorial.

Ipswich: S.H. Cowell, 1893. Folio [375 x 275 mm.] pp. title, preface, list of subscribers, 35, 10 plates. Original printed wrappers, front cover loose, gutta percha perished, so loose within the wrappers. Probably the printer's copy, label reading "A publication sponsored jointly by John Shewell Corder and S.H. Cowell. Here are some particulars of works production costs etc with work tickets written out by Mr. W.B. Hanson." With additional material including: i) annotated list of subscribers with residence location of subscribers in pencil, ii) itemised sheet of material costings for the publication, showing the papers used, total £40 7s iii) 2 notes of quantities ie. 200 copies at size 11 x 13¾, as this copy, and 250 copies at size 12¾ x 17 [large paper copies] iv) 17 pieces, correspondence with subscribers and the printer regarding sales etc. Rare, only 6 copies located. Christchurch Mansion was built in the mid 16th Century and by the late 19th Century was showing the inevitable signs of deterioration> Corder wished to record details of the house before it was lost. A syndicate bought the estate, selling much of the land for development, and one of their members, Felix Cobbold from a prominent Suffolk family, presented the house to the town of Ipswich, the corporation subsequently bought the park surrounding the mansion.
