SNELLING, Thomas - Snelling's Seventy-one Plates of Gold & Silver Coin, with their weight, fineness, & value.

London, H. Chapman, W. Collins, T. King, (about 1790?). 25 x 17 cm. Old marbled boards. One text leaf and 24 pages with very fine and exact engravings - three coins on each page save for plate 1, that contains two. 1st edition. Boards worn. Binding inside stained and a bit loosening. Bookplate of Samuel Beuzeville Byles (who died in Hackney, London, 1876, 41 years old). Paper browned and foxed. Every plate with some marginal notes in very old handwriting. A curious book showing old coins, possibly for collectors: 12 plates contain English gold and silver pieces from Henry VIII to Cromwell, the others Continental coins of the same era. Though meticulously copied from coin to copperplate, sharper than the usual coin, sometimes letters are mirrored, and the Half Moidore of Portugal has been printed upside down.
