Cambridge, MA: Advocate House, 1950. 1950. THE SECOND PUBLISHED ILLUSTRATION BY EDWARD GOREY - Quarto, 11 inches high by 8 1/2 inches wide. Softcover, bound in creamy white pictorial wrappers with a cover illustration by Edward Gorey featuring two "Mr. Earbrass"-like characters [of The Unstrung Harp] tossing sticks at two hooded figures mounted on pikes. The edges of the covers are slightly darkened or soiled and there is a tiny chip out from the bottom corner of the rear cover. 24 pages. Very good. RARE. The cover features Gorey's second published illustration. His first published artwork also appeared in The Harvard Advocate four months earlier in the May 1950 "Commencement Issue". Frank O'Hara's first published poems appear in this issue. Although listed as "Francis O'Hara" on the contents page, the two poems appear on page 9 under the name "Frank O'Hara". The poems are "The Drummer" and a much admired O'Hara poem titled simply "Poem" which begins "The eager note on my door said 'Call me, / call when you get in!'". A story by O'Hara, "Late Adventure", also appears in this issue. This is O'Hara's third print appearance following two short stories and a play which appeared in previous issues of The Harvard Advocate. Edward Gorey and Frank O'Hara were roommates at Harvard. Also in this issue is an essay by Stephen Spender "Modern Poetry and Science" and a poem by John Ciardi, "Midnight on a Side Street". Very good .
