HENRY BESTON was an American writer and naturalist, and is considered one of the fathers of the modern environmental movement. His now classic observations of Cape Cod are captured in his classic, THE OUTERMOST HOUSE, written after Beston spent what he called "a year of life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod", and has been called one of the motivating factors behind the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Author Rachel Carson said that Beston was the only author who ever influenced her writing. Canadian artist THOREAU MACDONALD was also considered a designer, calligrapher, writer, publisher, farmer, naturalist, nature lover and conservationist. Thoreau MacDonald was self-taught but worked with his father, Group of Seven member J.E.H. MacDonald. Colour blindness forced him to work mainly in black and white. Thoreau MacDonald contributed illustrations to some 150 journals, novels and books of poetry, and he was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters. His graphic work and paintings can be found in many important public and private collections, including the McMichael Collection, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Hart House at the University of Toronto and the National Gallery of Canada.
