Bagot, Annette & Julian Munby (editors) - 'All Things is Well Here' Letters From Hugh James of Levens to James Grahme, 1692-95 (CWAAS Record Series Vol. X)

Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, Cumbria, 1988. First Edition, Softcover. Fine Condition. 9780950077987 Inscribed by Author. inscription on pre-title page reads "from the author New Year 1988"; Colonel James Grahme, one-time Privy Purse to James II and Master of the King's Buckhounds, man about Court, friend of the Monarch and also of the Monarch's mistress, found life difficult on the accession of William and Mary. Suddenly he became a suspected traitor, Catholic, and plotter. That he was none of these things, or only in a very small way, did nothing to make his circumstances more comfortable. He bought Levens from his cousin Alan Bellingham in 1689, and prepared to make this house in Westmorland fit for a civilised man to inhabit with his wife and family. Grahme spent much of his time away from Levens so corresponded with the men left to further his interests & direct his works. Hundreds of these letters survive & those printed here, from his steward Hugh James, are of especial interest for their vividness & quality of information. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 205 pages.
