The second, much enlarged and improved edition of the first proper Ainu-English dictionary (first 1889). A grammar has been added to this edition. The Reverend John Batchelor (1854-1944) was a British missionary who lived among the Ainu people for more than sixty years. During this time he became close to the people and knowledgeable about their culture, religion and language. He was the first to write in Ainu, creating a writing system for the language.
