NY, Club House. VG. The Lotos Club is one of the oldest literary clubs in the U.S. It was founded in 1870 when NY Mayor A. Oakey Hall invited. several friends to establish a congenial meeting place to entertain distinguished visitors from Europe & other parts of the world. As a result a group of artists, writerse, actors, merchants, musicians and public officials met one n ight in Albert Weber's piano warehouse on lower Fifth Avenue and formed themselves into a club to promote & develop art, sculpture, architecture, journalism, music, drama, science, education & the learned professions & to provide an assembly of representatives, amateurs and friends of literature, science & the fine arts & members of the clerical & collegiate orders. In 1947 the Club moved to a French Renaissance mansion. Rose binding with navy spine & gilt decoration & lettering. Sl fading at edges of binding.
