Kōno Bairei 幸野楳嶺, artist. Bairei Hyakuchō Gafu Zokuhen 楳嶺百鳥畫oe Oe編 (続編) [Bairei's Album of 100 Birds] Supplementary Series, 3 vols. Meiji 17 [1884]. Tokyo. Oekura Magobē 大倉孫-衛, publisher. 3 volumes approx 24.5 x 16.5cm string-bound Japanese-style, fukuro-toji in original decorated wrappers and title slips with printed labels on top right hand corner. Introductory notes, indices, advertisements and names of birds within woodcuts are in Japanese text. All volumes have dated colophon. Bairei's hanko in red ink on many of the pages. This is the Zokuhen Oe編 (続編) (supplementary series) that followed the original 3 vols of the same title that were printed in Meiji 14 [1881]. Lovely single and double page original woodblock prints of birds with a slight wash of peach by painter and illustrator Kōno Bairei 幸野楳嶺 (1844-1895). The vols are ordered 天 Ten [Upper, "heaven"], oe Chi [Lower, "earth"] and 人 Nin [Middle, "person"]. Vol 天 Ten has title page on red paper on inside front wrapper, a [2] cho introduction and [1] cho index to birds, [22] cho of woodcuts and [1] cho of advertisements in rear with colophon on rear inside rear wrapper for a total of [26] cho. Vol oe Chi has title page on red paper on inside front wrapper, [3] cho initial text and [1] cho index to birds, [22] cho of woodcuts and colophon on rear inside rear wrapper for a total of [26] cho. Vol 人 Nin has title page on red paper on inside front wrapper, a [1] cho index to birds, [21] cho plus a sheet of woodcuts and [1] cho of ads in rear with a single sheet colophon and a colophon on rear inside rear wrapper for a total of [24] cho. For further details see Mitchell, p. 217. Wear, chipping and soiling of wrappers with damage to title slip (still readable) of 1st vol. and to printed labels. Split cho in 1st volume with one starting and split cho in 3rd vol. Title page detaching on inside wrapper of 2nd vol. Occasional spots of foxing, ink blots and thumbing, mainly at edges. Woodcuts are otherwise in good condition with nice printing. .
