GALTON Douglas, SIMPSON James - Copy of a Letter to the Right Honourable Lord John Manners, MP, First Commissioner of Her Majesty's Works, from the Government Referees for the Main Drainage of the Metropolis, in answer to the Report made by Messrs. Bidder, Hawksley and Bazalgette, to the Metropolitan Board of Works, upon the Report of the Referees.

London, House of Commons 1858. 48pp, various tables 32x20, sewn pamphlet Very good Simpson was the Chief Engineer for the Lambeth and Chelsea Waterworks Companies; Galton was a friend of Florence Nightingale and worked with her on improvements to both healthcare and medical facilities. In this letter they attack the famous report from Joseph Bazalgette and his colleagues for both understating the seriousness of the problem of sewage pollution of the Thames and its health impacts, and for a grossly inadequate solution to it. While Bazalgette's scheme was the one that was constructed, and proved successful, Galton and Simpson's letter is probably a more accurate assessment of the scale of the problem. [This Galton and Simpson should not be confused with the duo of the same surnames who were responsible for some of the greatest comedy writing of the 20th century]
