Boston, MA: Moore & Crosby, City Printers, 1855. 1855. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY ROBERT C. WINTHROP - Octavo, brown cloth titled in gilt with frames & decorations in blind on both covers & the City of Boston seal in gilt on the rear cover. The corners of the covers and the head & tail of the spine are rubbed & the lower half of the front joint is starting to split. 72 pages. The front hinge is cracked. The edges of the pastedowns, endpapers & flyleaf are darkened and there is occasional light foxing. Despite its flaws, a good, attractive copy. First edition. Boldly inscribed by Robert Winthrop who delivered one of the addresses on this occasion: "Mrs. C. Baring Young / with the kind regards of / Rob. C. Winthrop. / Boston, / 26 Feby / 1856." Robert Charles Winthrop [1809-1894] was an American lawyer and philanthropist and one-time Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. After Daniel Webster resigned from the U.S. Senate to become Secretary of State in 1850, Winthrop resigned from the House and was appointed by fellow Whig Governor George Briggs to fill the remainder of Webster's Senate term. His views proved no more palatable to the abolitionists than Webster's and he failed to win reelection to either of the Massachusetts Senate seats. After several further electoral defeats, Winthrop retired from politics at the age of 41 and spent the rest of his life on literary, historical and philanthropic pursuits. He was a major early patron of the Boston Public Library and was president of the Massachusetts Historical Society from 1855-1885. This book is scarce in the cloth binding. Good .
