Mottled calf, gold-tooled spine (head of spine chipped); marbled endpapers; red-edged leaves. The eight plays contained in this volume are: Le marquis ridicule, L'écolier de Salamanque, L'héritier ridicule, Jodelet ou le maître valet, D. Japhet d'Arménie, La fausse apparence, Le prince corsaire. Two of these are Scarron's best-known comedies: Jodelet, ou le maître-valet - in early productions of which the title role of the comic valet was played by the famous comic actor Julien Lespy, known as Jodelet - and Don Japhet d'Arménie, a play in which the main character's exaggerated sense of his dignity, his grandiloquent language and the grotesque humiliations to which he is exposed, provide an element of buffoonery.
