Traduzidos de italiano em portuguez.

Lisboa: por Antonio Alvarez, Impressor del Rey N.S. vendese em casa de Lourenço de Queiros, liureiro do estado de Bragança, 1642. 4to. [2], 16, [2]p. Hbk. Half binding in green morocco and green cloth by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. ***** A rare tract relating to the independence of Portugal, which was declared in December 1640 with the accession of the Duke of Bragança as John IV. (The union of the Spanish and Portuguese crowns in 1580 under Philip II of Spain had long ceased to function effectively, not least because of conflicting mercantile interests in South America.) Opposition to Portugal's independence came from Spain and Rome. This tract sets out John IV's claims as submitted to the Pope by his ambassador Miguel de Portugal, Bishop of Lamego - claims supported by England, France, Holland and Denmark. The Pope rejected the bishop's credentials and he left Rome on 18 December 1642 after a year of fruitless application. (See E. Braz‹o, A miss‹o a Roma do bispo de Lamego, Boletim da Biblioteca da Universidade de Coimbra, v.18, 1948, pp.1-65.) A pencil note on the fly leaf of this copy identifies the author as Pantale‹o Rodrigues Pacheco, a member of Lamego's embassy. V.F. Goldsmith, A short title catalogue of Spanish and Portuguese books, 1601-1700 in the Library of the British Museum, P526 (2 copies). Not traced in Silva. NUC reports only the Harvard copy.
