First edition of Hedin's narrative of his first expedition to Asia during the years 1893-97. It covers his explorations in the Pamirs, the deserts of the Takla Makan, and the Lop Nor regions, Tsaidam and Southern Tibet. . Original photograph of Chang, the Giant. Size: 6,4 x 10,8 cm. He is dressed in a Chinese traditional costume, most likely his performace outfit. Chang Woo Gow was born in Fuzhou (Canton) in the 1840's. He was well educated and travelled around the world performing as "Chang the Chinese Giant". His height was claimed to be over 2,4 meter!. In 1878 he retired from stage and settled in Bournemouth, where he operated a Chinese teahouse and a curio store.
