Knoop held the position of curator of the botanical gardens of Mariënburg, the manor house (near Leeuwarden) of Princess Maria Louisa von Hessen Kassel, widow of Johan Willem Friso, Prince of Orange, and regent for their grandson the Dutch Stadtholder Willem V.
