Smead, Benjamin - The World, Vol. III - Whole No. 121, May 16, 1808 and Vol. III - Whole No. 136, August 29, 1808
Bennington, VT, Benjamin Smead, 1808. First Edition. Two issues; 19 x 11; pp. [4]; laid paper, printed and ruled in black; both issues with the left margin trimmed along fold, resulting in the two leaves being separated; mild age-toning and spotting; a few nicks and cuts to edges; in good or better condition. Scarce copies of an early, weekly, short-lived periodical, they were issued by well-known printer and publisher Benjamin Smead. Smead began his career in Bratleboro, publishing the first newspaper in town - "The Federal Galaxy" - from 1797 until 1803. He would also print the first book in Brattleboro, a sermon given by Reverend William Wells, in 1798. After suspending the Galaxy, Smead moved to Bennington, where he began issuing the "Epitome of the World." Its continuation, the current "The World," first appeared in October of 1807 and ceased publication in March of 1809. Smead would dramatically annouce its demise by issuing a single sheet, on April 11, 1809, with a column title "The World at Length Ended." . Good .
