Simone Lucie Ernestine Marie Bertrand de Beauvoir, called Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986), dominated not only the French intelligentsia, but feminist thinking throughout the world for over fifty years. The paradox this presents in the context of her tireless devotion to Jean-Paul Sartre is only one of many confronted here in her first full-scale biography. The range of her work as a writer is enormous, but she may, however, be best known for her relaionship with Sartre. Despite the intensity of their shared passion - physical, political and intellectual - 'the beaver' and the great existentialist never committed themselves to marriage. She was with him when he died, but her importance to him was far more than that of a muse and a support. Indeed de Beauvoir conducted a long and mutually inspirational affair with the American writer and Nobel Prizewinner, Nelson Algren (in accordance with what Sartre descibed as 'contingent relationships). An unpublished correspondence of 1,682 letters betwee those two has been released to the authors of this book. They reveal as much about de Beauvoir and her friends - Camus, Picasso, Genet and Giacometti, as well as Sartre - as they do of a profoundly sensual relationship.
