(Virchow, Rudolf Ludwig Carl; Wolff, Julius; Schatz, Christian Friedrich; and von Waldeyer-Hartz, Heinrich Wilhelm Gottfried). - [Articles on Cholera, Croup & Diphteria, Etc. By Rudolf Virchow], As Published in "Berliner Klinische Wochenschrift. Organ Fur Practische Aerzte... . " Edited by Dr. C.A. Ewald. [a Full Year's Run of 52 Issues from January 5, 1885 Through December 28, 1885, Bound in One Volume As Published].

Berlin: Verlag von August Hirschwald, 1885. 1885. - Quarto, 12-3/4 inches high by 10 inches wide. Marbled black boards backed with a black cloth spine, titled in gilt on the spine. The covers are heavily rubbed with wear to the edges, corners and head & tail of the spine. viii & 873 pages, with occasional textual illustrations. The hinges have been reinforced with early linen tape, though the rear hinge has cracked. The front edge of the brittle front endpaper is chipped. The pages are darkened, yet intact though somewhat fragile. Good. The contents include 4 articles by Rudolf Virchow, including "Croup und Diphtherie" [Croup and Diphtheria] on pages 129 through 133; "Demonstration von Lepra laryngis" [Demonstration of Leprosy of the Larynx] on pages 189 through 191; "Ueber die Vergiftungen durch Miesmuscheln in Wilhelmshaven" [On mussel-poisoning in Wilhelmshaven] on pages 781 through 785; and "Erwiderung gegen C. Thiersch (betr. Choleraatiologie)" [Rebuttal to C. Thiersch in regard to the etiology of cholera] on page 714. Known as the "father of modern pathology", the German physician Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow (1821-1902) was also an anthropologist, prehistorian, biologist, writer and politician. As the founder of social medicine, he was know to his colleagues as the "Pope of Medicine". Other articles include Julius Wolff's "Ueber die Ursachen und die Behandlung der Deformitaten, insbesondere des Klumpfusses" [an article regarding the causes and treatment of clubfoot], on pages 161 through 166 and 182 through 186, with illustrations. The work by German surgeon Julius Wolff (1836-1902) is considered one of the milestones defining orthopedics as a distinct discipline in the field of medicine. Wolff's law states that bone in a healthy person or animal will adapt to the loads under which it is placed. When the load on a particular bone increases, the bone will remodel itself, becoming stronger to resist the pressure. Dr. Heinrich von Waldeyer-Hartz's article: "Die neueren Forschungen im Gebiete der Keimblattlehre" [Recent research in the field of Cotyledon theory], appears on pages 257 through 263 and pages 280 through 288, with illustrations. The German anatomist Heinrich Wilhelm Gottfried von Waldeyer-Hartz (1836-1921) summarized neuron theory and is known for naming the chromosome. Anatomical structures of the human body "Waldeyer's tonsillar ring" and "Waldeyer's glands" (of the eyelids) were named after him. The neuron doctrine which he espoused states that the nervous system is made of discrete individual cells. His article, published here, is on the subject of Cotyledon theory which asserts that in the second to third week after fertilization of the egg, 3 cotyledons emerge to form what will become the human body. Prof. Schatz of the Univeraity of Rostock's article "Zur Therapie der Cephalocelen und der Spina bifida" [an article on therapy for encephalocele and spina bifida] appears here on pages 441 through 445, with illustrations. The German gynecologist Christian Friedrich Schatz (1841-1920) was rector of the University of Rostock and was appointed full professor in 1872. Schatz became director of the Clinic for Obstetrics and Gynecology and the head of the State Midwifery Institute in Rostock. He distinguished himself through publications on the birth mechanism, intrauterine pressure measurements, the periodicity of labor and placental studies. Good .

"Clarke began carving out his reputation as a "scientific" science fiction writer with his first science fiction novel, Against the Fall of Night, published as a novella in 1948. It was very popular and considered ground-breaking work for some of the concepts it contained. Clarke revised and expanded the novella into a full novel which was published in 1953. Clarke would later rewrite and expand this work a third time to become The City and the Stars in 1956, which rapidly became a definitive must-read in the field. His third science fiction novel, Childhood's End, was also published in 1953, cementing his popularity. Clarke capped the first phase of his writing career with his sixth novel, A Fall of Moondust, in 1961, which is also an acknowledged classic of the period." (from Wikipedia). Moffet, Thomas [Mouffett, Moufet, Muffet] - Insectorum sive minimorum Animalium Theatrum

Thom. Cotes 1634 [20], 1-285, 296-326, [4], over 500 woodcut illustrations in the text + 2 unnumbered leaves of illustrations at the end. . HB. Sm. folio, recased in orig. mottled calf boards, rebacked in matching style, raised bands, leather title pieces, marbled endpaper. Minor wear to corners of boards. Some light browning/foxing, but this is less than often found with this work. Final page just cropped at outer edge with slight loss to two figures. Bookplates of two previous owners to endpapers.. First Edition. Text Latin. This book is the first dealing entirely with entomology to be published in the British Isles. It originated with a manuscript by the Swiss physician and naturalist Conrad Gesner (1516-1565), which remained unpublished. The manuscript passed to the English scholar Thomas Penny (c.1532-88), who spent fifteen years bringing together additional material for the book, a task which remained incomplete at the time of his death in 1588. Penny bequeathed the manuscript to Moffet, who added further new material, chiefly taken from Edward Wotton's "De Differentiis Animalium Libri Decem", and eventually completed the manuscript in 1589. It remained unpublished when Moffet himself died in 1604. Sir Theodore Mayerne, a physician and scholar eventually acquired the manuscript and published it, with the addition of a dedication, in 1634. The work was illustrated with 580 woodcuts. The illustration of the American Swallowtail butterfly on p 98 is notable as the first representation in print of an American butterfly. The work also includes spiders, with notes about their many 'virtues', such as swallowing spiders to prevent gout, or that spiders can foretell the weather. One theory suggests that Moffet's daughter, Patience is the person referred to in the English nursery rhyme, 'Little Miss Muffet'. Lisney 3; Nissen ZBI 2852. Bibliographical note: According to Lisney there are three variant imprints, or 'issues' of this book - the title page here corresponds to his second issue with the name of the bookseller Guiliel. [William] Hope following that of the publisher, Thomas Cotes. However, there are a number of errors in pagination, listed by Lisney, including page 48 numbered 52, which he states is corrected in the second issue (it is not corrected in this copy, nor in several others we have seen; Lisney also mentions copies of the first issue with the error corrected). There is a ten digit jump where page 286 is numbered 296 without any corresponding break in the text, an error which then continues to the end of the volume..
