Une des oeuvres majeures du sensualisme, l'utilité et le plaisir étant présentés comme les fondements de la morale, applicables également à la vie politique et sociale des nations, 'De l'Esprit' d'Helvétius a soulevé des vagues d'indignation et s'est assuré un succès durable. Jean-Jacques Rousseau en réfutait les principes dans l''Emile'. Comme il devait arriver dix ans plus tard au 'Système de la Nature' de son ami le Baron d'Holbach, l''Esprit' d'Helvétius fut immédiatement frappé d'interdit par la Congrégation de l'Index, le 31 janvier 1759. Cette condamnation fut bientôt suivie par 'un arrêt du Parlement, rendu le 6 février 1759, (qui) fit brûler, le 10 du même mois, cet ouvrage condamné de toutes parts' (Quérard). This pioneering social worker, activist, philanthropist, suffragette, writer, founder of Chicago's famed Hull House, was the first American female to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1931); in 1910 she published her remarkable memoir, "Twenty Years at Hull-House." Handsome PS, heavy stock 8" X 10", n.p. n.y. Very good. Faintest of wear only. Well-known half-length portrait of the reformer in later years, taken by Moffett in 1924 (so noted in lower left corner of image), showing an unsmiling Addams gazing straight at the viewer. Along the blank lower margin, she pens, "Faithfully from Jane Addams," the ink lightening somewhat as the writing progresses. Quite attractive -- and scarce. .
