Reliure en plein maroquin aubergine, dos à cinq nerfs orné de fleurons dorés, date dorée en queue, dos légèrement décoloré, plats abondamment ornés de roulettes et filets dorés en encadrement, quatre écoinçons ornés de petits fers dorés enrichis d'une pièce de maroquin mosaïquée bleue en médaillon estampée d'un fleuron doré en son centre, roulettes dorées sur les coiffes, gardes et contreplats de papier marbré, ex-libris d'Ernest Stroehlin encollé sur le contreplat supérieur, encadrement de filets et roulette dorés sur les contreplats, double filet doré sur les coupes, très légers frottements sans gravité sur les coins, toutes tranches dorées. Très petit manque restauré en partie supérieure de la page de titre, sans atteinte au texte. Très rare satire anti-protestante, sous la forme d'un dialogue entre Mestrezat, célèbre pasteur protestant et le surveillant du temple de Charenton dans lequel Mestrezat officiait. Le temple de Charenton sera détruit en 1685 lors de la révocation de l'Edit de Nantes. * Il s'agit sans doute d'une des expressions les plus théâtrales de la controverse entre catholiques et protestants, qui avaient alors changé les armes d’acier pour celles de papier (Pierre de Beloy) : ""Le temps de l’édit de Nantes a été celui de la controverse interconfessionnelle, orale et écrite, le but étant de vaincre l’adversaire, le réduire au silence, ou mieux le convertir, l’amener de l’erreur à la vérité"" (Marianne Carbonnier-Burkard).Techener qualifiera cette oeuvre de ""critique spirituelle et facétieuse"", ajoutant qu'il s'agit d'une ""Pièce très rare, qui n'a pas été connue par les auteurs de la France protestante"" (Librairie Techener, 1888, n° 3903). Le temple de Charenton, où officiait Mestrezat, fut le lieu de culte des protestants parisiens au XVIIe siècle, alors que la célébration du culte réformé était interdite dans les grandes villes selon les stipulations de l'édit de Nantes. On a même identifié le ""surveillant du temple de Charenton"" traité également de vulgaire lanternier dans ce pamphlet, comme étant le célèbre Pierre du Moulin, tout premier pasteur du temple, qui avait obtenu une vocation en 1599 pour l'église réformée de Charenton (Louis Mercier, Tombeau de la mélancolie. Littérature et facétie au XIIIe siècle, p. 737). L'auteur anonyme tourne les deux protagonistes en ridicule - il met en scène Jean Mestrezat se plaignant au surveillant d'avoir été attaqué par ""le méchant petit abbé de Clausone"" - l'ardent controversiste Gabriel Martin, abbé de Clausone avait en effet écrit de violents pamplets contre lui. Cet ouvrage pourrait-il être de la main de Clausone lui-même, se félicitant de ses propres écrits ? Quoi qui'il en soit, les reproches abondent sur l'hérésie de la religion réformée, un ""ordre ecclésiastique dans lequel l'on y voit un lanternier [le surveillant], tenir l'un des premiers rangs"" - ce même lanternier qui s'exclame dans ces lignes : ""je suis plus savant que tout les Conciles puisque je puis les censurer"". Superbe exemplaire à la prestigieuse provenance, habillé d'une reliure en plein maroquin, de cet ouvrage dont un seul autre exemplaire est répertorié à la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Provenance : Ernest Stroehlin (1844-1907) docteur en théologie et professeur d'histoire de la religion à l'Université de Genève - avec son ex-libris gravé par Champel dont la devise est Mente Libera, son monogramme ""GES"" (Gaspard-Ernest Stroehlin) encollé sur le contreplat.
