Description: San Francisco, CA: Phillips, Smyth & Van Orgden and George Spaulding & Co. 1904. Hardcover. First edition; 11 1/2 x 8; pp. [9], 10-11, [2], 14-559, [1]; tooled morocco, illustrated in gilt and red; rebacked in black and red leatherette; rubbing to bottom edge and corners of boards; small (burnt [?]) spot to ffep; small personal stamp of previous owner to first blank leaf; illustrated with portrait frontis, photographic plates, and photographs; overall in very good- condition. A beautiful, massive book on the Knights Templar, it was published, according to the author, "..as a contribution to the literature of knight Templary in the United States, rather than as a souvenir of the Twenty-ninth Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment." Although Elmer White, the official historian of the 1904 San Francisco Conclave, focused mostly to the events of that particular one, he also provided exhaustive history of the Templars in general. Most importantly, the book contained many photographs of city landmarks, before the 1906 Earthquake that would demolish many of them just two years later. Ill.: 0. 2.
