Second edition; 5 1/2 x 8; pp. 34; beige wraps printed in black; light spots to wraps, else minor wear; illustrated with photographs; very good. Valaam Island is the biggest one of fifty, comprising the Valaam Archipelago in Russian Karelia. It is best known for its Valaam Monastery which was found sometime in the 10th century by a Greek monk, Sergius, and his Karelian companion, Herman and was intended as a northern outpost of the Eastern Orthodoxy against "the heathens." Valaam is also home to Resurrection Skete which according to legend was erected on the spot where Saint Andrei Pervozvanny had placed a stone cross. Addressing the desire of many Russian pilgrims to visit the Holy Land but unable financially to do so, Edicule Reproduced after the Holy Sepulchre was created in 1906. The book describes the history of the monastery and the edicule and the story of philanthropist I. Sibiriakov whose generous donation of 10 000 rubles in 1896 helped renovate and preserve the sacred complex. Not in OCLC or in the trade. Ill.: 0. 2.
